Our 2012 Event
Take the Lake is a 5K fundraising Run and Walk around Wakefield's scenic Lake Quannapowitt. We pride ourselves on hosting an event which satisfies serious runners and casual walkers and runners alike. Our goal is to raise money and awareness for the New England Coalition of Cancer Survivorship. In 12 years we have now raised over $150,000 for cancer related charities.
In 2011, we started a 'Team Division' - and we are expanding on that concept in 2012.
Please join us for our family friendly - walker friendly - runner friendly event as we celebrate survivorship!

What is Take the Lake 5k?
The Take the Lake 5K is a charity run and walk around Wakefield's beautiful Lake Quannapowitt. Since the founding of the race twelve years ago, over 4,400 local walkers and runners have participated in the event and we have raised $152,000 for two cancer related charities (The American Cancer Society and The New England Coalition for Cancer Survivorship). We hope you can join us for our 13th annual event on July 15th, 2012! Year after year, runners and walkers, family and friends, children and grandparents have universally enjoyed this event.
| If you might want to join us or perhaps take a sponsor role, please add your email address to our list. We only mail twice a year - with event reminders. |

New England Coalition for Cancer Survivorship
The New England Coalition for Cancer Survivorship is a nonprofit cancer-inclusive community comprised of survivors, caregivers, friends, professionals, and cancer-specific organizations. Contributions to the Coalition directly advance our efforts to improve the quality of life for all people in New England affected by cancer in three specific ways:
- EDUCATE and provide resources about issues relating to cancer and cancer survivorship,
- ADVOCATE on behalf of those touched by cancer, and to,
- EMPOWER cancer survivors, family members, friends, and caregivers by creating a strong survivorship community, providing an information network, and access to resources, programs and events.
The New England Coalition for Cancer Survivorship is proud to partner with the leaders, participants, sponsors and contributors of Take the Lake. Working together, we send the message that there is life, hope, and the opportunity to pursue happiness beyond the diagnosis of cancer.
*New* Participate as a Team!
We are inviting groups to participate as teams. Form a team with your co-workers or friends, or in honor of a loved one affected by cancer. The number of team members is unlimited and your team shirts, hats etc. are only limited to your imagination. Build a little team spirit with your friends or co-workers at Take the Lake 5K. And now, with the online team registration and fundraising system we are using - you can make it easy for team members and friends to sponsor and support you - or to register as a member of your team.

Dedication
Take the Lake is Dedicated to Janice (Mignosa) Frye
Janice (Mignosa) Frye traces her roots to Wakefield. A voracious reader, Wakefield High School (class of 1980) scholar and thespian, and Lucius Beebe library regular, Janice loved all things literary. She carried that affection to UMass at Amherst (Journalism, 1984) and settled in Holyoke to marry Bob Frye, a teacher. Jan worked in the wonderful and caring community of Bay Path College in Longmeadow, Mass. Janice and Bob formed a wonderful young family, Samantha, Zoe, and Calvin Frye. The family carries on Janice's quiet love for books, home, and relationships. Janice lost her struggle with cancer in 1999. We would like to continue Jan's story by paying tribute to her and to the organizations that strive to help the countless local families afflicted by this cruel disease. Please join us in the "Take the Lake 5K" road race and walk to benefit The American Cancer Society and The New England Coalition for Cancer Survivorship.
